Hanhart 417 ES Red Lion

With the 417 ES, Hanhart celebrated the return of a legend among chronographs in 2020. The wish of many collectors for the original diameter is now being fulfilled. The new 417 ES Red Lion, limited to 150 pieces, not only brings back a case of 39 mm, but also the iconic red pusher. Vintage Light Old Radium Super-LumiNova® brings additional charm of the past to the wrist.

Robustness, reliability and readability. Hanhart built the first pilot's chronograph for the German armed forces based on these three criteria from the mid-1950s. The purpose of the 417 was uncompromising use on pilots' wrists. Hanhart supplied the German armed forces with the chronograph for almost ten years, until the brand concentrated on building hand stopwatches in 1963. The few remaining pieces of the original 417 have become some of the most sought-after vintage chronographs from Germany.

Hanhart used caliber 42 on the 417, which was a successor of caliber 41. Instead of the asymmetrical distance between the pushers, the further development had a symmetrical distance between crown and pushers.

There were two different versions:

TYPE 417: In this model, the case was made of matt chrome-plated brass and a pressed stainless steel case back.

TYPE 417 ES: This model had the same movement and the same dial structure but a stainless steel case. ES after the variant name also stands for stainless steel

Limited to 150 pieces, the Hanhart 417 ES Red Lion picks up on the original diameter of 39 mm, making it perfect for smaller wrists. Thanks to the hand-wound caliber, the watch has an overall height of 13.3 mm despite the heavily domed sapphire crystal, which gives it a presence on the wrist but does not make it look disproportionate.

A sharply drawn and polished marks the transition from the satin-finished horns to the flanks. As a typical stylistic feature of a Hanhart, the fluted bezel rotates smoothly in both directions. Its red position markings are as reminiscent of the historical model of the 1950s as the details on the watch's dial. The bicompax layout and the lettering seem to have been cut from the face of the early 417. In order to convince even die-hard vintage fans, we have also adopted the numbers and fonts from back then.

Vintage Light Old Radium Super-LumiNova® is used for the 417 ES Red Lion. Together with the white lettering and hands, they form a pleasing contrast to the matte, deep black dial. Complemented by the historical logo on the dial and the corresponding logo on the crown, the chronograph has incomparable vintage charm.

To ensure that our latest chronograph not only looks good but also runs precisely, the reliable hand-wound caliber SW 510 works behind the screwed stainlesssteel back in best Swiss Made quality. In addition to a stop-second function, it offers a power reserve of up to 58 hours when fully wound. The historic 417 was also hand-wound, although its radius of action outside the cockpit was severely limited due to its small water resistance. Therefore, our new 417 ES Red Lion can withstand the pressure of the depth up to 10 bar.

A black calfskin wrist strap with a leather underlay makes it comfortable to wear from day one. For extra comfort on the skin, the black calfskin strap has Alcantara on the inside. A pinbuckle with the historic Hanhart logo ensures a good grip. For further design options, we also offer straps in warm-tone color combinations.

The new 417 ES Red Lion comes with Hanhart's trademark: the red pusher. The legend says that the pilot tenderly pressed a kiss to his sleeping wife's forehead before quietly leaving the apartment. When he looked at his Hanhart chronograph in the hangar, a smile flitted across his lips: she had painted the pusher with her red nail polish so that he would always think of her and return safely ...

The chronograph was developed together with the world-renowned watch enthusiast TGV. His Youtube channel The Urban Gentry enjoys great popularity and he himself discovered the 417 ES many years ago as a "Grail-Watch" for himself. The cooperation is marked on the caseback and his logo in combination with the red pusher lead to the nickname of the watch: Red Lion.

The new Hanhart 417 ES Red Lion is available immediately for 1,940 Euro including 19% German VAT.
