In the quiet study of the Earth's night sky, an immense blue universe emerges. It is here, in these infinite observations of the planets and stars, that Roger Dubuis has embraced the wondrous and vast colour from above – and placed it on the dial of a new calendar timepiece. A compelling shade, expressed through classic fine watchmaking and the Maison's own signature precision and sporty sophistication.

A Passion for the Biretrograde

Mr. Roger Dubuis, the Maison's founder, was drawn to complex high watchmaking, yet believed it should be expressed with simplicity and a certain form of playfulness.

Guided by this philosophy, he developed the patent for his own biretrograde display in 1989, where a simplified construction enhanced both beauty and performance. Working alongside Jean-Marc Wiederrecht, he rethought the traditional retrograde mechanism, streamlining it from a watchmaking perspective. This approach eased assembly and improved the stability and readability of the hands on the ecliptic retrograde counters. Furthermore, it purposely evoked joy and emotion for the wearer, enhancing their experience through a pure yet ingenious mechanism.  

The innovation relied on two key technical advances: the use of spiral springs instead of strip springs, positioned directly on the hand pinions rather than on the rake, and a redesigned cam. Together, these changes reduced the time required for adjustment while delivering greater precision, stability, and visual clarity in the movement of the hands.

Today, the Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar continues that Maison story of biretrograde choreography. Angled, skeletonized hands trace the day and date with striking clarity, provoking an emotional response for wearers as the dynamic energy of the movement unfolds on the wrist.

A Certified Movement

At the heart of the Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar beats the RD840 Calibre. This automatic movement delivers a 60-hour power reserve and reveals, through the sapphire caseback, a sculpted oscillating weight inspired by the Maison's first design from 1996, reinterpreted with a contemporary edge.

The movement's architecture and finishing invite a clear view of its mechanics, reflecting the meticulous craftsmanship required for Poinçon de Genève certification – a hallmark that represents Roger Dubuis' philosophy of quality, where performance, provenance, and aesthetics are inseparable.

Every component of the Calibre RD840 is hand-decorated to meet this exacting benchmark, with 14 finishing techniques that include wheel-bevelling, burnisher-bevelling, frosting, circular graining, Côtes de Genève, truing, internal drawing, external drawing, rounding, perlage, tip polishing, mirror polishing, tooth polishing, and rounded tooth polishing.

Steel and Cosmic Blue

Roger Dubuis has crafted the entire timepiece in 316L stainless steel. It is elevated through multiple finishing techniques, including a mix of polishing, shot-blasting, and satin-brushing, which not only create contrast within the design, but also bring a variety of light-reflecting surfaces.

Meanwhile, the seven levels of the signature multi-layered dial include the Roger Dubuis colour known as “Cosmic Blue” – a shade that represents the immense and inspiring sky on Earth, when the daytime blue darkens  into night, bringing the curiosities of space into view.

The depth found within the dial includes:

• A double-surface flange with a broad azuré finish on top and opaline on the side, coated in Cosmic Blue.

• Rhodium plated hour markers with white SLN inside.

• Sun-brushed ecliptic counters with a rhodium coating.

• A circular-brushed centre plate with Cosmic Blue coating and beveled angles.

• Small-seconds counter at 6H and biretrograde emblem at 12H, each coated in Cosmic Blue, with an azuré finish and beveled angles.

• A circular-brushed dial ring with a Cosmic Blue coating.

• The open-work calibre with retrograde bridges decorated in Côtes de Genève.

• A sun-brushed main plate module with a Cosmic Blue coating.

The Excalibur Biretrograde Calendar is completed with a multi-link bracelet in stainless steel, providing comfort and traditional watchmaking style around the wrist. For an alternate option, an additional blue rubber strap is also included with each watch, completed with a triple folding clasp in stainless steel.

As with all Roger Dubuis creations at Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the Maison has drawn inspiration from the movements of the sky, and the stellar observations that have shaped humanity's understanding of time and space.
