Panerai Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681
Marking the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team’s performance and participation at the 37th America’s Cup, Panerai unveils the new Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681. Exclusively limited to only 137 pieces, the new timepiece is designed to be a coveted collector’s item to celebrate the sophisticated aesthetic of the AC75 boat.
PAM01681 is a tribute to the unwavering spirit and commitment of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli sailing team towards the 37th America’s Cup. We have carefully designed this watch to capture the essence of the team’s advanced AC75 boat, translating its design language into a wearable piece that resonates with sailing enthusiasts and watch collectors alike. Each of the 137 pieces in this exclusive series carries the spirit of the team’s determination, making it a truly special memento for those who appreciate the convergence of professional sailing, Italian design and Swiss technicity.” says Jean-Marc Pontroué, CEO of Panerai.
Incorporating the spirit of the Luna Rossa AC75 boat into a timepiece of striking beauty and functionality, the watch’s design elements are specifically derived from the boat’s characteristic features and translated into a wearable instrument of precision.
The watch’s aesthetic is based on the silver sun-brushed dial, which is reminiscent of the boat’s sleek, reflective hull. This eye-catching colour scheme is complemented by grey and red tones, which mirror the Luna Rossa team’s uniforms to create a cohesive visual narrative that connects the watch to the sailing team’s identity. The dial is adorned with the decal of Luna Rossa, while the bezel luminous dot, hands and indices are treated with Super-LumiNova®. One of the most striking technical features of the PAM01681 is the ‘azurage’ technique applied to the small seconds sub-dial. This intricate pattern is created using a specialized tool that carves concentric circles into the dial, resulting in an illusion of moving waves that adds depth and texture to the surface of the dial. From the Super-LumiNova® to the visual contrast of the ‘azurage’ as light plays off the engraved patterns, the mix of these elements contributes to improving the overall readability of the watch, a nod to the DNA of Panerai in elevated functionality.
Set in a 44mm brushed steel case, the watch boasts a unidirectional rotating steel bezel with a black polished ceramic disk, chosen for its notably higher resistance to scratches than a metal one, essential for withstanding unintended contact with various objects the bezel is usually exposed to and might cause it damage. The brushed and polished surfaces add depth and contrast to the overall design. The bezel rotates only counterclockwise, allowing for the calculation of immersion time - a crucial feature for an underwater instrument to comply with the rigors of sailing. With a rubberized black crown that prioritizes functionality and durability, the material provides a superior grip, even in wet conditions, making it easier for the wearer to adjust the watch’s settings while on the water. This feature is particularly beneficial for adventures on the sea, as it ensures the crown can be maneuvered during intense sailing and races. Completing the timepiece, the screwed case back – which helps to ensure the watch’s high degree of water resistance – showcases an engraving of the Luna Rossa AC75 boat, a tribute to the 37th America’s Cup and the partaking of the Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli team.
At the heart of the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa PAM01681 is the automatic P.900, a caliber renowned for its reliability with a 3-day power reserve. The P.900 is an automatic caliber that integrates expansive function within the confines of remarkably streamlined proportions. It measures 12½ lignes (28mm) in diameter and is only 4.2 mm thick, among the slimmest automatic calibers in the Panerai portfolio. The energy necessary to accumulate a power reserve of three days is delivered by a bidirectional oscillating weight and stored in a single barrel. Its balance wheel, oscillating at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, is securely fixed in position by a balance cock. The caliber is equipped with a stop-second function that enables precise time setting.
Water resistant up to 30 BAR (~300 meters), the timepiece has been rigorously tested, subjecting it to a pressure up to 25% greater than the guaranteed water resistance value to ensure it fulfils Panerai’s stringent standards. The watch case, sapphire crystal and crown-protecting device with lever work together to create a watertight seal, preventing moisture and dust from entering the movement.
Innovation at Panerai extends to the user experience with an intuitive interchangeability system that allows the wearer to effortlessly switch between straps with a special device that accompanies the timepiece, ensuring versatility and style. The first bi-material strap is a nod to Luna Rossa with its grey tone and striking red accents, while the second black rubber strap offers a more subdued option.
