ochs und junior special edition luna sole blue patina white gold leaf
We are delighted to present Ludwig Oechslin’s ochs und junior special edition luna sole blue patina white gold leaf. The brand has launched this edition of the ochs und junior ochs line 2024 with a sterling silver 925 case on a culturally significant day, August 15, ferragosto.
Ferragosto, which has been celebrated since 18 BC in ancient Rome under Emperor Augustus as a harvest and thanksgiving festival known as feriae augusti, became associated with the Assumption of Mary into Heaven in the 5th and 6th centuries. Since then, it has been a significant Christian day marked by religious celebrations and cultural events in Italy and elsewhere. Therefore, we associate the special edition luna sole blue patina with a silver case with this special day, “ferragosto.”
The elegant watch with dial, date disc and sky disc in the center in ochs und junior blue patina, presents itself with applications in white gold leaf (indexes, date dot, hands, second disc and sun) as well as in white gold powder (moon or lunar ring). The 40mm case is in sterling silver 925 with an engraving on the case back that refers to the date of the first release of the watch on ferragosto 2024.
Less is - as (nearly) always - more!
The luna sole displays the hours, minutes, seconds (via the second disk), date, sun, moon phase, and the moon’s position relative to the earth and sun. Oechslin achieves these functions using just six module parts, including the dial. The Sterling silver 925 case has a diameter of 40mm, a height of 9mm (including the glass), and a weight of 64 grams (without strap and buckle). It is the thinnest and most elegant of the ochs und junior watches to date.
In the center of the dial, there are two overlapping discs. The lower disc, the sky or sun disc, shows the sun as a large round circle in white gold leaf on one side of the center and a blue patina heartshaped area on the opposite side. The upper disc, the lunar ring in white gold powder, representing the moon, is perforated or consists of a hoop the size of the sun. Together with the heart-shaped surface in blue patina of the sky or sun disc, the different phases of the lunation can be read using the lunar ring.
The sky or sun disc rotates in 24 hours, completing one full rotation per day around the center, where the earth is located. At 12:00, the s un is at the top position, and at midnight, it is at the bottom position. In the morning, when it rises above the horizon, it is at 9:00, and in the evening, when it sets on the horizon, it is at 3:00. This allows its position in the s ky to be determined at any time.
The same applies to the moon, with the only difference being that it lags behind the sun and completes one full rotation approximately every 29.5 days. This means it also passes over the heart-shaped surface, and its illumination can be read in the inner circle of the lunar ring. When the moon is opposite the sun, it is fully illuminated, indicating a full moon. When it is directly above the sun, it is outside the heart-shaped area and completely unlit, indicating a new moon. Its position also corresponds to its position in the sky.
To summarize the functions:
The moon (lunar ring) and the sun (sky or sun disc) rotate clockwise. The sun completes one rotation in 24 hours (one day), while the moon rotates a bit slower, so it lags behind the sun by one rotation every 29.5 days. In other words, for every 29.5 rotations by the sun, the moon makes 28.5.
The luna sole has a direct drive from the sun gear to the moon gear through a reduction gear, while the selene uses an epicyclic gear. The luna sole has therefore a deviation of one day in 122.3 years.
