Nivada Grenchen Depthmaster Blue

At the mention of Nivada Grenchen’s Depthmaster, the first thought that comes to mind is often ‘Pac-Man’ – because of the distinctive indices at 6 and 9 o’clock that resemble the ghost-gobbling star of the 1980s iconic video game created by Toru Iwatani. Some have also dubbed it the ‘Baby Panerai.’

Enthusiasts and collectors often give standout watches a special designation, and the evocative sobriquets they have come up with for the Depthmaster attest to its significant impact in the world of horology.

Exploring the Depths for 60 Years

The first Depthmaster was launched in 1965, easily recognizable by its cushion-shaped case and round bezel with 120 clicks and a 15-minute scale. Even back then, it impressed with extraordinary capabilities, placing it in a league with the best dive watches – while most watches would claim a water resistance of 15 to 20 ATM (atmospheres), equivalent to 150-200 meters, the Depthmaster was rated to 100 ATM, i.e. a depth of 1,000 meters. It was the first diver to achieve that rating.

Thanks to Guillaume Laidet, who spearheaded the brand’s revival in 2018, this exceptional diver’s watch has resumed its deep-sea explorations with several dial variations, including this brand-new midnight blue version equipped with a SOPROD P024 movement. Both retro and modern, the purpose-driven aesthetic effectively makes the Depthmaster timeless.

From Night to Light

The midnight blue dial captures the very essence of dive watch history, featuring square and rectangular indices, and a triangle marker at 12 o'clock. Designed for underwater exploration, it comes with a screw-down crown and case back to fully protect the movement against water ingress. Its unidirectional ceramic bezel with 120 clicks and a 15-minute scale allows for precise no-stop dive time calculation and monitoring. Its comfortable cushion-shaped case and impressive 1,000-meter water resistance make it the ideal tool watch for professional and passionate divers. The added integration of an automatic helium escape valve, consistent with the watch’s depth rating, ensures reliable operation even under extreme conditions, like saturation dives. Just in case.

The Depthmaster has always been one of those rare watches that not only looks the part but performs with quiet purpose and sophistication. Its mastery of the deep and the elegance of its curves make it the perfect companion on an expedition of marine worlds or urban landscapes. A watch approaching its sixtieth anniversary, and as ever at the cutting edge of innovation for discerning collectors and adventurers.
