Kurono Tokyo Special Project 34mm Star Dial
Introducing the new 34mm Star Dial, a special project series close to Hajime Asaoka’s heart.
This watch is an adaptation of Hajime Asaoka's Tsunami 'As Time Goes By' atelier watch, unveiled in Geneva in 2024. It has been specifically tailored for Kurono Tokyo, featuring high-polished steel applied ‘star’ indices paired with a unique Art Deco font, meticulously designed by Hajime-sensei, character by character.
For this piece, in addition to the Art Deco numerals, I incorporated stars into the index. This style, known as the 'Star Dial ', was popular in the 1930s. In fact, I originally wanted to include stars in Tsunami 'As Time Goes By ', but due to the complexity of manufacturing, I ended up using only numerals." ~ Hajime Asaoka
The stars were mass-produced based on Hajime-sensei's design using molds and forging techniques. The results were so impressive that sensei is now considering creating a complete version of the Tsunami 'As Time Goes By' with these stars.
This new iteration might be unveiled in Geneva in 2025, and, like the original, will be a non-commercial item.
The Tsunami ‘As Time Goes By’ was never intended for sale—it was purely a personal piece. Since it was just for myself, I designed it freely, without any concern for marketability. However, after unveiling it, I was pleasantly surprised by how well-received it was. That enthusiasm ultimately inspired me to design this watch." ~ Hajime Asaoka.
