Jacob & Co. Astronomia Solar Dragon – Rose Gold & Black Titanium
In 2025, Jacob & Co. breathes new fire into its collections of dragon-themed timepieces. Melting the rules of high watchmaking and métiers d'art, housed in a 44-mm case, Astronomia Solar Dragon perpetuates the exhilarating theme in a more wrist-friendly format. Preserving its showmanship, it also spells out excellence in craft.
Astronomia Solar Dragon plays on all the strengths of Jacob & Co.: exclusivity, spectacular theme, quality of execution, high watchmaking and high jewelry. At the heart of each piece lies a coiled rose gold dragon. Wrapped around the three-dimensional Astronomia Solar movement, it's visible from all angles through the sapphire caseband, a signature of all Astronomia timepieces.
Dragon-themed timepieces are a pillar of the novelties crafted by Jacob & Co. The brand is fighting tooth and claw to push the envelope on a subject it ceaselessly engages. After creating the 50-mm, double-axis flying tourbillon Astronomia Dragon collection, Jacob & Co. now widens the flock with Astronomia Solar Dragon.
From the founding collection, it retains the combination of high watchmaking and fine crafts, taken to the highest level of care and minute detail and executed in Astronomia Solar's 44-mm format. The entire scene, mechanics and animal intertwined, is revealed through the domed crystal and caseband, all made of transparent sapphire.
Body colors
The centerpiece of the collection is the dragon sculpture nestled inside the case. Inspired by the Asian dragon, it's easily recognizable by its barbs and the absence of wings, reserved for its European counterpart. Its body is cast individually and made from three single pieces of solid rose gold. Each one is engraved and polished by hand over the course of two weeks.
Once its scales, claws, hair and overall texture are finished, each dragon is hand-painted, an operation that requires an extra week of highly skilled work. On the rose gold iterations, 4 types of colors are applied on 9 pieces each. On the 4 black titanium versions, the dragon is all black and shiny. It lies atop of back dial made from black or blue titanium. On it, Jacob & Co. has printed a sky map, charting constellations in gold lettering.
A centerpiece stands tall above each Astronomia Solar Dragon in the form of a Jacob-cut, 288-facet gem, whose color is part of each piece's color theme. On the rose gold versions, the gem is yellow, a nod to the Astronomia Solar's original calling. On the black titanium versions, each one of four unique pieces features a different color.
Inner workings
The dragon is coiled and wrapped around with the crown-less Astronomia Solar movement. At its closest, the dragon's scales are less than half a millimeter from the watch parts. Usually a fully rotating one, this movement is designed to remain static in order to accommodate the collection's theme.
Caliber JCAM42 is composed of three arms. One is a cantilevered flying tourbillon, the second is the skeletonized hour and minute dial, while the third is an Earth globe, rotating on its own axis every minute.
Caliber JCAM42 is made up of 296 components, most of which are crafted out of titanium. They're assembled by hand in a vertical arrangement that creates a unique volume for the dragon to occupy. It's because of this unique configuration that Jacob & Co. initially chose the Astronomia case and movement to house all of its dragons. The Astronomia Solar layout, smaller in diameter and height, still offers the majestic creatures a house worthy of their awe-inspiring nature.
Dragon culture
For Jacob & Co., every year is the year of the Dragon. For the past ten years, Jacob & Co. has been releasing dragon-themed high watchmaking timepieces without interruption. In 2024, Jacob & Co. celebrated the Chinese New Year of the Wooden Dragon with a fireworks of dedicated timepieces. The Astronomia Solar Dragon's introduction demonstrates the unbending determination of Jacob & Co. to remain watchmaking's House of Dragons.
