Formex Essence Space Ghost 41mm Automatic COSC

Formex presents the Essence Space Ghost 41mm, the debut of a new format and the latest in a series of standout releases marking the brand’s 25th anniversary year. Adding to its impact: a silver-finish dial cut from the 4.5-billion-year-old Muonionalusta meteorite.

The 41mm case design slots neatly between the 39mm and 43mm models, reflecting community feedback and hitting the sweet spot for versatility, wearability, and wrist presence. It expands the Essence platform with a new fit and updated proportions, while retaining the modular system of interchangeable straps and bracelets. Additional dial variants will follow later this year.

True to Formex’s performance ethos, the latest evolution of the Essence platform debuts a re-engineered butterfly clasp – a new patent – that builds on the micro-adjustability of the previous generation to offer even greater allday comfort and security. This new clasp allows for adjustability without the need to open the clasp, even to tighten the bracelet. The innovative system requires more force to pull the adjustment out than it requires to push it back in and thus shortening the length of the bracelet. More subtle but no less significant: a redesigned screwdown crown system that integrates seamlessly with Formex’s patented Case Suspension System; and new link-fastening screws for the steel bracelet – a step change in the assembly of this critical component, ensuring greater precision, durability, and wear resistance over time.

The new case size on the Essence Space Ghost 41mm is in no small part also the result of feedback from our community. It fits perfectly between the 39mm and 43mm models, offering a balanced feel and fit for a wider range of wrist sizes – with the same versatility and performance. Speaking of which, our new micro-adjustable butterfly clasp is a real game-changer, offering more wrist fit flexibility and comfort as well as seamless bracelet aesthetics. Add to this the specially treated meteorite dial, with its blued hands and markers, and you get a clear sense of how Formex keeps pushing forward in both aesthetics and precision engineering. The Essence Space Ghost 41mm is striking, technical, and unmistakably Formex - to the core.Raphael Granito, CEO of Formex

New Size, Same Values and Versatility

The Essence Space Ghost 41mm retains the hallmark design elements of the Essence collection, crafted in durable 316L stainless steel, and is now offered in a new, versatile size that complements the existing 39mm and 43mm models. Versatility naturally extends to the complete range of straps and bracelets already available for all Essence models. Here, the quick-release system allows users to easily swap between leather, rubber, NATO, nylon and stainless steel and back again – in no time and without tools. The full spectrum of Essence dial colors and types will be available shortly.

Inside: the tried and trusted – and decorated – Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, known for its Swiss-made reliability and precision. With COSC-certification for chronometer-grade accuracy, this workhorse engine ensures the same high standards of performance and dependability that Formex is synonymous with.

Meteorite Dial: One of a Kind, by Nature and by Design

The Space Ghost debuts with a dial cut from the Muonionalusta meteorite – a fragment over 4.5 billion years old that struck Earth more than a million years ago after traveling through space at –270°C. Its distinctive Widmanstätten pattern, formed through slow cooling over eons, gives each dial its own intricate, interlacing structure – no two are alike.

To preserve the meteorite’s natural beauty and prevent oxidation, Formex, together with Cadranor, the sister company specialized in dials and a reference in the industry, developed a proprietary treatment that penetrates into the porous iron matrix. A galvanic rhodium plating seals the surface and enhances its silvery sheen without compromising the raw texture beneath. Blued hands and markers amplify the dial’s spectral character.

A precision-engineered and machined dial – because Formex can

Dials made from stone, and that includes meteorite, present a challenge inherent to their nature: because it is cut extremely thin, the material’s inherent brittleness is aggravated. That is why markers are often attached to a
separate mounting ring, not affixed to the dial proper. It’s easier, cuts down on waste, and almost imperceptible to the naked eye.

Not imperceptible enough for Formex. In a rare and technically demanding process, perfected by Cadranor, microscopic holes are drilled into the meteorite to anchor each index. The result is a dial that’s not just visually extraordinary, but structurally honest – and uniquely Formex.

Formex’s New Micro-Adjustable Butterfly Clasp

Evolution at work. The Essence Space Ghost 41mm is the first model to feature Formex’s next-generation microadjustable butterfly clasp, designed for the steel bracelet version. This newly patented system builds on the benchmark-setting concept introduced in 2019 and developed in close collaboration with sister company Dexel – an industry-leading bracelet and buckle specialist located just next door.

In the previous version, opening and closing required a specific sequence – short segment first, then the longer one – and the 4mm micro-extension could only be set with the bracelet open. The new clasp eliminates those constraints, offering quicker, more intuitive adjustment on the fly with a new variable force system developed specifically for this model.

Formex’s ongoing partnership with Dexel continues to shape its leadership in ergonomic fastening solutions. The latest clasp evolution is intuitive, tool-free, and designed for even quicker, easier, and more precise wrist fit microadjustments.

Formex’s new micro-adjustable butterfly clasp system at a glance:

  • Three-position micro-adjustment: 0mm, 3mm, and 6mm – vs. 0mm and 4mm previously
  • Fully integrated into the bracelet for smooth, seamless aesthetics
  • Micro-adjustment in and out operated in the closed position – for greater ease and security
  • Calibrated resistance: extending the clasp requires more force than retracting it, improving control and enhancing comfort with quick and seamless adjustment.
  • Gapless extension: even in the extended position there is no gap at the buckle (as with the previous system) – preserving the bracelet’s visual integrity and wear comfort

Subtle Innovations, Substantive Improvements

New Screw-Down Crown

The Essence Space Ghost 41mm also introduces more subtle but no less significant innovations. The new screw-down crown system enhances security and prevents the crown tube from accidentally deforming. Seamlessly integrating it with the patented Case Suspension System was an engineering challenge. Traditionally, the Case Suspension System is designed to allow the crown to move with the case, adapting to the wearer’s wrist movements for increased comfort and shock absorption. Adapting this flexible system to accommodate a screw-down crown, which requires a more rigid, fixed connection for mechanical resistance, required extensive redesign and testing to ensure that the crown could securely lock in place.

Re-engineering the closure system led Formex to take a long, hard look at the rest of the bracelet. And it turns out there’s a better way when it comes to the screws that hold the links in place.

New Bracelet Screws

Alongside the new micro-adjustable butterfly clasp system, the Essence Space Ghost 41mm also features a redesigned link-fastening screw for the stainless steel bracelet. Instead of the old-school approach of using a drop of threadlocker or a composite threadlocking treatment to keep screws from loosening over time – a nontrivial concern given the constant movement, shocks, and stresses the bracelet endures – Formex opted for a purpose-designed screw with an offset thread. This allows the moving part of the link to articulate freely, while the threaded section remains securely isolated from mechanical stress. No threadlocker is needed, and more importantly, there is no risk of the bracelet screws coming loose. A small detail that makes a big difference: improved bracelet precision, durability, wear resistance – and peace of mind.

With the Essence Space Ghost 41mm, we weren’t just filling a gap between 39 and 43. We took the chance to ask: where can we make it better? The result is a real sweet-spot size that wears just right for a broader community – and upgrades across the board. The new butterfly clasp lets you micro-adjust the fit over a wider range, on the fly, without opening it, and it still looks completely seamless on the wrist. The redesigned crown works seamlessly with our Case Suspension System, locking in securely without compromising comfort. And then there’s the meteorite dial – silver-finished, deeppatterned, with blued hands and markers that give it real presence. That’s the Formex way: keep pushing, tweak the details, and make every watch a step forward. You could say it's a small step in size but a huge leap in substance."
