Fleming Series 1 Mark II Pacific and Redwood

American independent brand Fleming unveils the Series 1 Mark II Pacific and Redwood. 

Refined visual language, deeper dial architecture, and a fully reimagined movement advance Fleming’s pursuit of total design integration, where finishing is more than just decoration.

A watch dial is not a static surface,” says Thomas Fleming, Founder, Designer, and CEO. “It shifts – darkening in shade, brightening in sun, revealing and concealing its architecture as light moves across it. The Series 1 Mark II is designed entirely around this principle: that finishing is not decoration, but behavior. A watch worn daily should reward every glance with something new.”

The Series 1 Mark II represents the clearest and fullest expression yet of Fleming’s design philosophy: complete cohesion from case to dial to movement, achieved through obsessive attention to how surfaces respond to light. Every element references every other. The polished ring framing the dial echoes the raised center band of the case. The movement’s bespoke wheels mirror the case silhouette. Even component colors shift between variants, ensuring each watch reads as a unified composition rather than an assembly of parts.

Unveiled in 2024, the Series 1 Launch Edition established Fleming’s design language (and sold out immediately). The Mark II advances that foundation with a full reconsideration of the Series 1 archetype. Nearly every component has been changed in some way or another to better achieve its goals. The case geometry has been sharpened, the dial architecture deepened, and the movement completely redesigned to carry the same forms and finishing philosophy through every layer. The result is a pair of watches that reveal themselves over time, with details that emerge and recede as the watch moves through daily life.

The Series 1 Mark II is designed around a simple idea: the watch should change as you wear it,” continues Thomas Fleming. “We treat finishing as something active – surfaces respond, shift, and reward attention. And we design the case, dial, and movement as one continuous whole.”

Pacific and Redwood: Two Expressions of One Philosophy

The Series 1 Mark II is offered in two variants – Pacific and Redwood – both inspired by northern California, Fleming’s home. The inspiration is atmospheric rather than literal, interpreting the way a single landscape can look and feel entirely different as light, weather, and seasons shift around it. The watches are designed to behave the same way.

Pacific pairs a dark tantalum case with an especially dynamic dial. In soft light, it can appear moody, with hues ranging from steely blue to deep turquoise to nearly black, and its brushed surfaces add depth. In direct sun, it shines in vivid, jewel-like tones reminiscent of light reflecting off ocean swells. Tantalum’s unique blue-grey tone complements the palette perfectly. Developing Fleming’s complex case geometry in this notoriously difficult material required more than two and a half years of development – new tooling, new machining parameters, and new finishing techniques for a metal that behaves like no other material used in watchmaking.

Redwood uses a 5N (vs. 4N for the Launch Edition) 18k rose gold case and a dial that mixes warm gold and brown tones, echoing the ancient Coastal Redwood forests. It captures the way light filters through the canopy to the forest floor, creating rich gradients from shadow to sun and allowing for wide tonal shifts between browns, bronzes, and golds. It is an exercise in resolved complexity: layered, hand-crafted components that each reward close inspection, but whose real achievement is cohesion – a whole that far exceeds the sum of its parts.

Both versions share the same underlying construction and finishing techniques. The difference is in how they behave. One is quieter and more atmospheric, the other warmer and more commanding. Same philosophy, different moods.

Case Architecture

The Series 1 case follows traditional dress watch proportions – 38.5mm diameter, 8mm thickness, and long lugs – but its execution is entirely contemporary. The design is sculptural, intended to provide visual intrigue from every angle rather than presenting a single “correct” view. The unique three-part midcase construction features brushed top and bottom surfaces framing a polished central band that flows continuously through the lugs, creating a bright line that traces the watch’s silhouette when viewed from the side. The lugs themselves are skeletonized, reducing visual mass while allowing light to pass through. It’s a detail that can be missed from a distance but that is very striking up close.

For the Mark II, the case geometry has been subtly refined and sharpened, with crisper transitions and more precise definition between surfaces. The changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary, but they add up to a case that reads as more confident and more resolved than its predecessor (while still made in partnership with Efteor). Hundreds of 3D-printed prototypes were worn and adjusted to perfect how the watch sits on the wrist. The arc of the lugs was tuned to pull the case naturally toward the skin, making the Mark II so comfortable that by the end of the day you might even forget you have it on.

Dial Design

The Mark II dial builds on the sector-inspired layout of the original Series 1, but with significantly greater sophistication and integration with the case.

The most visible addition is the black-polished outer ring that bisects the markers in the middle third of the outer sector. Visually, it creates the illusion of depth, as if the dial recedes directly into the case. Functionally, it sharpens legibility. Conceptually, it extends the case’s polished center band onto the dial itself, yet another point of cohesion in the Mark II’s integrated design language.

This ring transforms with light, too: in diffuse conditions it nearly disappears, while it flashes to mirror brightness when struck directly. Hour markers now appear at two-hour intervals for more rhythmic integration with the sector divisions. Each marker is applied, polished, and faceted to catch light independently. The hands retain the silhouette of those on the Launch Edition but gain new facets and black polishing. Directional brushing on the main dial surface creates gradients that shift as the wrist moves; the sub-seconds register echoes the main dial’s architecture in miniature.

This architecture is also an example of Fleming’s in-house design process, with COO and Art Director James Kong having the original idea for the black-polished ring and then working in tandem with Thomas Fleming to integrate it into the Mark II’s overall design and to execute it in practice with partner Fabrika.

Movement: Calibre FM.02

Calibre FM.02 was developed in close collaboration with the legendary Jean-François Mojon. Hand-wound and under 4mm thick, it delivers a 168-hour (seven-day) power reserve from twin series-coupled barrels while maintaining elegant proportions.

The FM.02 is conceived not as a separate technical object viewed through a window, but as the third layer of a unified composition of the design, continuous with the case and dial. Bridges were redesigned for wider anglage and more sculptural geometry. Entirely new bespoke wheels and ratchet were created to echo the curved silhouette of the skeletonized lugs. And each wheel features 28 sharp interior angles painstakingly finished by hand. Across the movement there are 189 interior angles in total, including on a wheel that is not visible from either side of the watch, finished to the same standard as those on display. The embodies Fleming’s uncompromising approach, along with that of finishing partner Manufactor SA.

Finishing echoes the dial with varied techniques – including brushing, graining, frosting, and polishing – used throughout. Two distinct executions exist: cooler anthracite tones for Pacific and warmer gold-toned components for Redwood.

Many watches treat the movement as a separate design exercise,” says Thomas Fleming. “We take a different approach. The FM.02 is a continuation of the case and dial, and all components are held to the same finishing standard, whether visible or not.”

Availability

The Fleming Series 1 Mark II Pacific and Redwood are priced at 55,500 CHF and 53,500 CHF, respectively, and each is limited to 25 pieces. Both watches will be available directly from Fleming at fleming.watch from March 19, 2026, with deliveries beginning in April. Each is packaged in a newly redesigned presentation box with a removable travel case insert, and each comes with two calf leather straps and a Fleming pin buckle.
