After three years of intensive development, De Rijke & Co. proudly unveils its final tribute to the iconic Miffy: the White Ceramic Miffy Moonphase. This timepiece not only marks the closing chapter of a beloved collaboration but also stands as a testament to our vision on watchmaking.

An ambitious farewell. Three years of development and the end of an era

From the beginning, the vision was bold—combine a graphic icon with cutting-edge horology. But executing that vision, especially in ceramic, was a long and often uncertain road.

The journey led to a German firm known for grinding exotic glass shapes. They produced the first full-ceramic prototypes, CNC-machined from a single block—a process so demanding that a single case component required 48 hours of machine time. This proved unsustainable, but it confirmed one critical insight: the design could be realized in ceramic, even with complex case details like the signature side slot.

We started working with a few of europe’s leading ceramic processors. But we faced resistance. For most companies, a low-volume, high-risk R&D project just isn’t worth it.”

Prototypes in hand, real-world testing began—including two weeks of off-road driving through Morocco. Ultimately, it became clear a different manufacturing partner was needed— one with experience in high-precision ceramic components and a willingness to collaborate on a small scale. That path led to Japan, where the cooling watch market had opened unexpected doors for partnerships with previously untouchable suppliers.

Innovative construction

The signature rotating case remains, but working with ceramic required a complete rethinking of the mechanism. Instead of a traditional steel click spring, a steel ball and compression spring ensure a tactile, well indexed, rotation. The ‘lugcase’ is now axially clamped using a special spring, while four miniature ball bearings reduce friction and improve durability.

The entire watch is built to be fully modular and repairable. Components like the crown tube and rotation mechanism are threaded into a brass movement holder, not press-fit or glued. The caseback also screws into this holder with six M1 screws, and a custom gasket ensures water resistance up to 50 meters, supported by O-rings in the tubes and a nylon seal at the crystal.

Everything was designed with long-term serviceability in mind. If something breaks, you replace just one part—not the entire case.”
